So, a little backtracking…. here we are in early April:

This is when you catch the phlox at its best. The pear garden is relatively under control at this point–a few daffodils still swaying here and there, and the wild woods violets haven’t yet made their move to take over the world. As we start to think about vegetables, Joe has the idea to plant a few yellow squash and zucchini in this garden; so we clear some space around the phlox for four new plants.

Add a little mulch, and things are looking pretty good! The columbine is especially beautiful…
